Documenting the systematics, biogeography and life-history of parasites in the Tropical Indo-west Pacific

Research

Scott Cutmore tapeworm

My research focuses on the systematics of two major groups of marine parasites, the Trematoda infecting teleost fishes and the Cestoda infecting sharks and rays. In my PhD studies (completed in 2011) I surveyed the rich, but mostly undescribed, fauna of tetraphyllidean cestodes in sharks of Moreton Bay, in south-east Queensland, Australia. Since graduating, I have shifted my research focus to trematodes of tropical and temperate fishes, with my current Postdoctoral work investigating a wide range of trematode families in the Tropical Indo-west Pacific. My research integrates classical morphological taxonomy with phylogenetic and ecological data for species delineation and higher-level trematode systematics.

Although I have published studies on 19 trematode families, three are of particular interest to me: the Gorgoderidae, Transversotrematidae and Aporocotylidae. Despite these families being exceptionally different genetically and morphologically, the species that belong to them have intriguing parallels. Members of each of these families have been reported from a wide range of seemingly unrelated hosts, distinct from the normal pattern of host-specificity seen in most trematode families. These three families also all infect unusual locations in these hosts, gorgoderids infect the urinary bladder and body cavity, transvesotrematids live under the scales and aporocotylids exploit the circulatory system; these sites are remarkably different from the intestine, which most trematodes infect. My research aims to illuminate how these three enigmatic families have managed to exploit such a wide range of host groups throughout the Tropical Indo-west Pacific.

Funding

My research programs have been funded by the Australian Biological Resources Study, the Australian Society for Parasitology, the Australian Pacific Science Foundation and Sea World Research and Rescue Foundation. This funding has facilitated the description many new species, the elucidation of novel biogeographic and host-specificity patterns and enabled the systematic review of a wide range of parasite groups.
